What is it?[]
A barber's pole is a type of sign used by barbers to signify the place or shop where they perform their craft. This is a tradition dating back to the Middle ages, where it was a sign of surgeons. It signified bloody bandages wrapped around a pole. In 1163, the clergy was banned from the practice of surgery, and from then on physicians were split from surgeons and barbers. After the formation of the United Barber Surgeon's Company in England, a statue required barbers to use a blue and white pole, and surgeons use a red pole. Modern barber's poles have electric motors to spin the colors. The red, white, and blue color scheme is almost exclusively a United States thing. Other places around the world typically have red and white striped poles.
